7 Historically Signficant Mediums You Probably Have Never Heard of (But Are Still Relevant in 2026)

In the spirit (no pun intended :) of exploring the BIG questions through tiny books via our “Tiny book About” imprint - I’m excited to be sharing some of our favorite research, resources and recommendations on a whole range of extraordinary experiences from near death experiences, psychic mediumship, ADC’s (after death communication), terminal lucidity, death bed visions, dream visitations, past life research (especially via the work published by the late Dr. Ian Stevenson and continued by the Division of Perceptual Studies at UVA) out of body experiences, psychedelics, Peak in Darien accounts, and even the wild, weird and wonderful world of “unusually hardcore” meditation practices (a term coined by Dr. Daniel Ingram) that is often used to describe deeper end meditative experiences that open a wide window into a wonderful world not normally associated with ordinary conscious experiences - we’re psyched to explore what’s on offer for those of us with an open mind to the magic, mystery and meaning ……but not so open that our brains have fallen out.

For students of psychical research and folks who study psychic mediumship both in and outside of lab settings, there are a handful of psychic mediums who remain relevant to the conversation today….even though the vast majority of people have no idea who they are.
In no particular order, here are 7 historically relevant psychic mediums whose legacy is a mixed bag…..but without a doubt, have left a significant footprint on the field that continues today. I’d argue that some of the best mediums below, especially Leonora Piper and Eileen Garrett are amongst the best refutations of the cheesy stereotypes that many skeptical scientists use to hand wave away the entire field and phenomena)
1. Leonora Piper (1857–1950) — USA Probably the single most rigorously tested medium in history. William James, Richard Hodgson, and the Society for Psychical Research subjected her to years of controlled investigation — including hiring private detectives to rule out ordinary information gathering. James ultimately called her his “white crow,” acknowledging she couldn’t be explained away. She remains the gold standard for serious mediumship research.
2. Eileen Garrett (1892–1970) — Ireland/USA Unusually credible in that she herself was skeptical of her own abilities and actively welcomed scientific testing. She cooperated with researchers at Duke University and elsewhere, and later founded the Parapsychology Foundation to fund rigorous inquiry. She was as honest about what she didn’t know as what she claimed to know — rare in this field.
3. Edgar Cayce (1877–1945) — USA The sheer volume and specificity of his documented readings, many made while in trance, are hard to dismiss entirely. His medical diagnoses were reportedly accurate enough that physicians took note. He kept meticulous records of over 14,000 readings, making him unusually transparent and verifiable compared to his peers.
4. Gladys Osborne Leonard (1882–1968) — UK Extensively studied by the Society for Psychical Research over many years. Unlike many mediums of her era, she consistently welcomed investigators and submitted to strict conditions. Researcher Oliver Lodge described some of her sittings as among the best evidence he’d encountered.
5. Geraldine Cummins (1890–1969) — Ireland A prolific automatic writing medium whose scripts were extensively analyzed by psychical researchers. She was notable for her integrity — she kept careful records, submitted to investigation, and never built a lucrative personal brand around her abilities, which tends to suggest genuine motivation.
6. Eileen Roberts / Estelle Roberts (1889–1970) — UK One of Britain’s most tested mediums of the mid-20th century, who worked cooperatively with investigators and whose readings were documented in some detail. Her reputation for integrity remained largely intact throughout her long career.
7. Arthur Ford (1897–1971) — USA Famous for the Houdini séance and studied by researchers including William Roll. His reputation is somewhat complicated by later controversies, but he remains one of the most investigated mediums of the 20th century and many investigators found aspects of his work genuinely puzzling.
